X-L Community : Beauty, Brain, Behaviour and BIG

The article hit last weekend’s news-stand. For the first time in a while, I stumbled across something that’s not mentioning overweight women adjacent to cancerous, diabetic, hypertension, heart disease and a whole list of other illnesses.

Big-sized women across the country join a community of X-Large Community of Indonesia. They try to change the growing national perception that big is ugly, slow, unattractive and unhealthy.  So far, the group have 183 members. The rules to join is that you have to be at least 70kg and above 20 years old. Of course the membership also welcomes big men, but not much was mentioned in the article. I guess big men have less problem with their body image as women. They aim to improve their quality of life in coping with the weight challenge. They also help each other deal with the self-confidence issues and most importantly, relationship issues. More chubby-lovers needed, I can tell you that.

They attribute most of the misleading stereotypes to advertisement and commercial alike:

They use all beautiful, skinny and tall girls in their ad. When they actually sell the products in the market, they expect everybody (of all sizes) to buy them – Kompas

Some people (in my office) thought that if overweight people start to hang out together, it will make them not to try to lose weight. That reminded me of an article from Newsweek, obesity is contagious and spreads through social networks of friends. Also there is some other views that fat acceptance is off-the-charts, wacky left-wing and ignorant to health issues.

Personally, I have some bigger-size friends. They are so much more fun to hang out with than my skinny-all-pretty friends. They are more relaxed, funny and smarter.

Ah-ha! And you thought no one would comment here 🙂 ……Interesting topic…Do you think if very-thin people started a community like this, it would face scrutiny? It’s sad how much important appearance is, and that we must create communities to garner support for the ramifications of being the way we are.
